The innovative Family Law Fellowship administered by the Albany Law School was established in 2021 by a gift from Joanne Monagan, Esq. (Albany Law, ’89). The fellowship is awarded annually to one outstanding student, recommended by the faculty, who intends to pursue a career in family and matrimonial law. The fellowship features full time summer employment at O’Brien & Associates under the direction of Joanne p. Monagan, J.D., Principal Attorney and CEO. The fellowship continues for two semesters during the fellow’s senior year at Albany Law School.
The Family Law Fellowship provides multiple learning and training opportunities with the fellow assigned duties and responsibilities directly related to active family law cases managed by the firm. Working with the firm’s attorneys, the fellow will prepare affidavits, legal correspondence and other documents related to family law practice; meet with clients and attorneys, and other professionals to discuss individual case details; assist in development of legal arguments, motions, and other case filings; assist in the preparation of court pleadings; and perform other essential functions required of family law practitioners.
The fellow will receive a stipend of $15,000 during the 3-semester fellowship program. Upon graduation, fellows are free to pursue their careers.
Nora Baker Selected: By unanimous consent of the designated faculty committee, Nora Baker, a resident of Troy, NY, has been selected as the first Albany Law School Family Law Fellow from a list of outstanding students who will graduate in 2022.
Nora’s extraordinary vita includes high academic honors, winner of the Domenick L. Gabrielli Appellate Advocacy Competition (1st Place Best Oral Advocate Award), exceptional experiences in various legal venues, including immigration law, that include work with the Justice Center at Albany Law (in the domestic Violence Prosecution Clinic), the NYS Supreme Court Appellate Division, Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office, and the United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Albany, NY. Nora worked and volunteered in Argentina and Ecuador which inspired her career objectives in family law and immigration. Nora speaks fluent Spanish.
