Avoid social media mistakes during divorce

If you are an avid social media poster, you may want to curtail your sharing during a divorce. Photos and information shared on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms can have a negative impact on your legal prospects in a divorce.

Some of the most common ways oversharing can impact your divorce include:

  • Creating questions about your financial situation: Your finances are closely scrutinized in a divorce. Online accounts of trips and new purchases can leave you vulnerable to accusations by the opposing party's counsel.
  • Shining a spotlight on your private life: Life goes on during divorce, including dating, parties and vacations. You have every right to unwind and enjoy yourself during divorce and custody proceedings, but public accounts of such activities are unnecessary and can be misinterpreted.
  • Giving “friends” the opportunity to spy on you: The harsh reality in a divorce is that some friends will not side with you. If these people have access to your social media feed they may lurk in search of damaging information. You can stop this from happening by carefully pruning your friends list at the first sign of divorce.

If you have concerns about your own social media posting or your ex's, consult with an experienced divorce attorney who understands how these issues are likely to play out in court. When in doubt, don't post!
