Reasons women may be more likely to seek a divorce

Women in New York may be more likely than men to file for divorce. There are a number of reasons this may be the case, and the greater financial security women have today along with a higher likelihood of working outside the home may be a contributor. For example, since women no longer have to reply on spouses for financial security, they may be more unwilling to tolerate infidelity or abusive behavior.

Emotional issues

Poor communication is a common reason for a divorce, and often, the burden of trying to manage that communication falls on women. Men are not traditionally brought up to deal with emotion well. They often rely on their wives and no one else for emotional support, and this could make them less likely to divorce. In contrast, women may have multiple sources of support among friends and family.

Additional burdens

Women still do more housework than men, with a study by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics finding that nearly half of women report doing housework daily compared to only one in five men who do the same amount. Marriage may simply offer fewer advantages to working women if they are expected to do most of the child care and housework as well. Furthermore, studies have also shown that many men are unsupportive of their wives if they begin to make more money than them.

Women who are considering filing for divorce might want to consult an attorney to discuss their options and what their finances might look like. If they earn significantly more than their husbands, they might be required to pay alimony for a period of time after the divorce. It is important that both people take steps to protect themselves financially even if they decide to negotiate a settlement instead of going to court.
